The Value of Science and Health
I enclose a letter I received from a young married man who went to Alaska in June. It shows what a comfort "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" is to all who faithfully study it, and of what immense value it becomes to them. When I hear of people complaining of the price of Science and Health I feel as was stated by some one in a recent Sentinel, a sense of pity for them, for well we know that if, even in a small degree, they comprehended the peace and joy, to say nothing of the health the "little book" brings to all, not only would they be willing as this young man says, to pay a passage to Alaska for it, but they would also realize why our hearts are so full of love and gratitude to our beloved Mother and Leader, the Rev. Mary Baker G. Eddy, for giving it to us. They would feel with us how much we owe her for the steady, earnest faithfulness with which she patiently overcame material sense, and hence was able to discern the life-giving Truth taught and demonstrated by Jesus, and again set forth to the world in our priceless text-book, Science and Health.
In connection with the author of this letter and the purchasing of Science and Health I want to say that he came to my office to say good-bye, and had intended purchasing a copy of Science and Health, but found that after his ticket and outfit had been bought he only had twenty dollars left, so had decided he could not possibly take one with him as he would have to take a pocket edition, and felt that it was out of the question to spend a fourth of his remaining capital on a book. I told him that that was a matter to decide for himself and said good-bye. He only had then about twenty minutes in which to go more than half a mile, check his baggage, and catch the train, but in a few minutes he came running back and said he must have one anyway. I told him he had chosen well, his letter shows he realizes that he did.—H. W. E., San Jose, Cal.
I study the "little book" every day and would not be without it for the price of a passage to Alaska. It is the means of much relief, and I feel very grateful to you for your advice, insisting on my having a book with me. I shall make good use of it.
