Tobacco and Liquor Habits Overcome

My attention was first called to Christian Science by the healing of a lady friend. The last time I saw this lady before her healing, I asked her husband what was the matter with his wife, and he said, "it will be but a short time before I shall be without a wife. The doctors say there is no hope for her, and that the end is liable to come any time." When I saw her few months later, the picture of health, my curiosity was aroused. I congratulated her upon her healthy appearance and told her she looked ten years younger than she did the last time I saw her. She said, "Christian Science has done it all, for God has healed me."

At this time I had some troubles of my own. I walked with a cane on account of rheumatism; I had worn glasses five years; I had used tobacco for thirty-five years, and I had not been perfectly sober and free from the influence of liquor in fifteen years. This lady knew my failings, her husband and myself having been intimate friends for twelve or fourteen years. I believe she thought she had a good subject to work on, and she gave me a good dose of Christian Science, which I willingly took. The next Sunday afternoon found me at the home of my friend and I received another dose of Christian Science. Time went on in this way a few weeks and I attended a Sunday service. This was in January, 1896, and I have gone regularly ever since. I had not been to the meetings more than a month when I laid my cane away and have not used it since. In a few weeks I discovered that I could see as well without my glasses as I could in my boyhood days. The next to go was the tobacco habit and at the end of six months the liquor habit was overcome. The last to go was the use of profane language.

While this was going on there were clouds continually arising to test my sincerity. I can look back to the many times I was tempted and went to my friend, the living witness, who would always tell me to be faithful and I would receive my reward; and at times, when it would look dark, she would say, "We all have our cross to bear, and this is yours; take it up and bear it and you will receive your reward." So I feel to-day that only for the kindness shown me by this friend I would have fallen by the wayside.
