Reply to Sermon on Christian Science
Davenport (Ia.) Leader
To Daily Leader:—
I have read with considerable interest your account of the sermon by Dr. Weddell, entitled "Christian Science and the Science that is Christian." I ask space in which briefly to present my impressions of the sermon.
In his sermon, the doctor does not attempt to say that Christian Scientists do not heal; in fact, he admits that they do heal. He does not claim that healing the sick was not an essential element of Jesus' teaching, but emphasizes the facts of Jesus' healing; he does not deny that Jesus commanded his disciples throughout all times to heal the sick and cast out devils, to give sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf, and to make the lame walk. No; all these things are plain teachings of the Bible, and must be accepted by any one calling himself Christian. Neither does he attempt to give a reason why we, at the present time, should not be able to practise this essential of Jesus' teaching.
