Christian Scientist's Reply

The Morning News

Rev. Dr. J. D. Jordan's sermon at the First Baptist Church last week on Christian Science has excited considerable comment. Dr. Jordan spoke plainly of the belief, calling it mere "jingle-jangle." "Idealism without an idea or ideal; Christianity without a Christ; science without a scientific fact stated or demonstrated; theological without theology; professing to be scriptural, it denies all Scriptures; a revelation without revealing anything except 'jingle-jangle;' claiming to be a revelation from God, which shrouds God in darkness and veils Him with mystical nonsense."

The leaders of Christian Science in Savannah, when asked about Dr. Jordan's sermon, had little to say. Mr. Edward H. Carman of Atlanta, has this to say in reply to the sermon : —

Dr. Jordan's text, on which he bases his sermon against Christian Science, "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good," is a favorite text with Christian Scientists, because from the teachings of Jesus, explained and illumined by "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker G. Eddy, they are enabled to prove that Jesus meant what he said, when, just before the ascension, or disappearance from human sight, he said, as given by Mark, 16:17, 18, "And these signs shall follow them that believe [understand] : In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."
