Among the Churches

The First Church of Christ, Scientist, occupied its new edicice, formerly the Chestnut Street schoolhouse, Sunday, May 20, when the service was held at half past ten o'clock, and Sunday School at twelve.

The building has been completely renovated and extensively repaired, and is now a very convenient and comfortable church edifice, though, of course, not of imposing exterior. The outside of the building has, however, been greatly improved by a coat of paint, and the brick work has been penciled in black, so the walls look as good as new. A tasty porch has been erected over the door, a gravel walk as been laid from the street to the door and the lawn is to be beautified with shrubs and flowers and put in first class condition in every respect.

Great improvement has been made inside the building. The old plastering was upon the brick walls, and this was conducive neither to beauty nor comfort, as a building so constructed is sure to be damp at all times when not thoroughly heated. Studs were therefore set against the walls, and over these lath and plastering have been placed. The walls have in this way been made perfectly true. They are tinted a light cream color, and the ceiling is white. New Florentine windows have been placed in the building. The window casings are new, and the changes have been such that the interior of the building has the appearance of entire newness.
