A Letter to Mothers

Dear Sentinel:—Through your columns may I have a talk with mothers, particularly those mothers who are just beginning to feel an interest in Christian Science? The devout students know already what an all-round, constant help this study is, in the home, and with the children. To you, dear mothers, who are longing to take a step upwards, to grasp a practical helper, I may surely say a few words of encouragement, for I so recently stood where you are, on the threshold, so to speak, hungry for spiritual food. Having tasted this bread "which cometh down from heaven," and found it good, I naturally turn to you, who are looking in the direction you wish to follow, and say, "Come also and partake, and see how satisfying and wholesome is this Truth that makes free."

A little over a year ago I caught the first bright gleam of Truth, through a demonstration. The trouble was an accident, resulting in a severe sprain and great fright. Alone, I turned to the only help there was, the ever-present God, and, knocking at the door of divine Love, it was opened to me, for in half an hour I was free from pain and fear. Since then I have had other proofs of God's care and love, and I know Him to be a never-failing support. The little understanding I have, has come to me through the daily study of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker G. Eddy, and the wise guidance of a true disciple of Christian Science. Study this text-book, with your Bible, and prove for yourselves the truth of the first line in the "little book:" "Leaning on the sustaining Infinite, to-day is big with blessings." Do this for your children's sake. If mothers only appreciated what a character-builder Christian Science is, our Sunday Schools would be full to overflowing.

Mrs. Eddy says: "Truth is demonstrable, when understood, and that it is not understood until demonstrated" (Science and Health, p. 219). As you study, as your thought is uplifted and you become conscious of drawing nigh unto God, you will wish to take your little ones to Him for healing, not only their physical ills, but all moral and mental ills as well. When these deformities, selfishness, temper, obstinacy, disobedience, etc., need to be overcome, to whom can the mother turn with such sweet assurance as to the Infinite Mind, God, who knows all, is always close at hand, and all-powerful?
