Why Christian Science Appeals to Thinkers
There is no subject which to-day is attracting more attention from thinking people than Christian Science, and it may be helpful to consider some of the reasons why this new yet old system of healing is appealing to multitudes of suffering humanity. In the first place, as we are taught in our text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker G. Eddy, Christian Science is based upon the great fact that God—Good—is the only real power, the one Mind and true Life of all that really exists, and from this unassailable premise it teaches us that God sendeth neither sorrow nor sickness, for He is the great Physician who healeth all our troubles. Armed with this Truth we set out as courageously as David when he went forth in the name of the Lord of hosts to slay the giant of the Philistines; and, God being with us, we shall have the same victory, for who or what could successfully oppose the power of God?
The one fact alone that Christian Science is based upon the omnipotence, omniscience, and omnipresence of God, lifts it above all criticism and turns the thought of intelligent people toward it. Could any foundation be larger, broader, higher, or grander than this? Surely it is the Rock of Truth, and from this premise follow innumerable advantages. The world is greatly under bondage to fear, and on this point Christian Science is a wonderful help, for it not only destroys the claim of disease, but with it a large amount of fear in general, for as patients find that this system really does heal one disease, they gain faith that all discordant beliefs can be destroyed. Soon this faith blossoms through experience into understanding, and fear disappears, for the reality of health and happiness has been revealed. Under this system of divine healing, one is made every whit whole, since what clears the head, strengthens also the feet. Then, too, we have our remedy—the power of Truth and Love—always at hand. We are not obliged to stop to prepare it and can never forget to take it with us. On land or at sea, in the desert or on the mountain-top, God is ever-present and all-powerful. The same Truth applies to all diseases, whether acute or chronic. One never needs to hesitate, for Truth is always the right medicine and always, when correctly applied and received, does its work. While healing from disease it also heals from sin.
Experience has proved that its moral effect is as great as its physical relief. It opens one's eyes to the beauty of purity and holiness, and lifts one higher in the scale of being, physically, morally, and intellectually, until the glory of spirituality begins to dawn on the human consciousness, and Truth, the impersonal Christ and Saviour, the spiritual idea, is revealed. Thus it is not only healing the present claims of disease and sin, but it is destroying their very roots, so that in time, if we are faithful, we shall rise to the altitude of Mind which is above all evil.
