Regarding Christian Science
Both Sides of the Question
The announcement of Dr. McLeod's sermon for last evening against Christian Science prompted the believers in Christian Science to request our publication of their views as presented by Judge Joseph R. Clarkson of Omaha, in a recent lecture on the subject.
The Republican, in its province as a general newspaper, gives herewith both sides of the question, as locally presented. In this connection we call attention to the fact, alleged to be substantiated by statistics, that only seventeen per cent of the population of Scranton are regular churchgoers. The thought is naturally suggested, whether Christian effort would not be better directed toward the reclamation of the eighty-three per cent of our population rarely or never seen in our churches, than in the endeavor to thwart and oppose any of the seventeen per cent professed followers of Christ?—Scranton (Pa.) Republican.
Entitled to a Fair Hearing.
Some days ago The Mail and Express printed an address on Christian Science by Judge Ewing. As a consequence, the Rev. Lewis Ray Foote of Brooklyn accuses us of being "used to advance such nonsense"—meaning by "such nonsense," Christian Science. Mr. Foote is entirely mistaken. In publishing Judge Ewing's address we simply gave Christian Science something to which it is entitled—a fair hearing. Christian Science may or may not be nonsense, but the fact remains that it appeals to a good many people, and because it does, fair play demands that it should be allowed to state its case. If Christian Science is nonsence, "the white light of publicity" will expose it as being just that. Why, then, should Mr. Foote object to the publication? Editorial, Mail and Express.
Dr. McLeod and Christian Science.
In view of the general interest in the lecture of Judge Ewing of Chicago, which has been aroused by Dr. Mcleod's sermon on Christian Science, copies of the lecture referred to may be obtained free of charge at the Christian Science Church, 519 Adams Avenue, or mailed free to any address. Also copies of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker G. Eddy, will be loaned to any one desiring to read it. Call on or address First Church of Christ, Scientist, 519 Adams Avenue, Scranton, Pa.—Every one will read will interest Judge Clarkson's (of Omaha) reference to Dr McLeod's subject, printed in yesterday's Scranton Republican.
