The Hill of Christian Science
The path of Christian Science is similar to a mountain trail that was described as "ten miles long and all up-hill." When we start up this hill, which the Rev. Mary Baker Eddy describes in the allegory in "Miscellaneous Writings," we do not see the beautiful green pastures and still waters that are along the path. We do not realize that just beyond each especially steep or rough place is one of these beautiful green spots, like an oasis in the desert. The places are never so steep but we can get over them, and just beyond we find the rest and reward for our efforts. The higher up the hill we go the more work we encounter, and the more we realize that "peace which passeth all understanding."
To each of us, as we look into Christian Science, it seems to be a giving up. This seems to be the main feature; but is it so? What have we given up? Nothing. What have we in its place? Everything,—God—Good—who is All. We have left below strife, anger, malice, hatred, unrest, discontent, envy, etc. We have in place of them love, peace, contentment, happiness. In Truth we have all that is worth having, and we find we have really given up nothing, and gained everything.
The beauty of Christian Science is like the taste of a new fruit. You can tell of its flavor, but each one must taste for himself to realize what it is. Each one must climb the hill, if he would reach the green pastures, and there find peace and rest.
