Love for others helped me quit smoking

Originally appeared on spirituality.com.

About 15 years ago, I was healed of a thirty-year smoking habit through my study of Christian Science. A key element of that healing was a firm trust that prayer would eventually win out over the addiction.

That trust had been kindled years earlier after I had listened intently to a friend tell me about healings she received through her study of Christian Science. Later I started reading the book she had recommended, Mary Baker Eddy’s Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, and witnessed my own healings.

Despite such healings, the habit of heavy smoking seemed impossible to shake. Although its persistence was disappointing, through the other healings I’d experienced, I felt a budding trust that prayer would eventually win out over the addiction. Indeed, Jesus’ promise that, “Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed” did eventually prove true in my life (John 20:29).
