A bag … and an identity restored

From the March 2006 issue of Le Héraut de la Christian Science.

My sister had come from Togo to spend the Christmas and New Year holidays of 2004/5 with me and my husband. When the time came for her to return home, we called a taxi to take her to the airport.

We live in a Parisian suburb that is known for its poverty and violence. I left with my sister in the taxi that afternoon. No sooner had we set off than the taxi had to pull up at a stop. There was a group of youngsters on the pavement. One of them approached the door on the right side of the taxi, and we and the woman driver thought he wanted to speak to us.

But to our surprise, he opened the door, took the driver’s bag and coolly walked off. We shouted in protest, but he didn’t turn back.
