The Christmas story brought healing to my grief

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

This will be the first Christmas I’ll celebrate without my wonderful husband, Robert. He passed on this year and I’m on my own.

The idea of spending it alone filled me with dread. How could I be joyous when I deeply missed my best friend and intellectual companion? How could I sing the Christmas carols I love without crying my heart out?

I turned to God and fervently prayed with one of my favorite Christmas carols, “O Come, O Come Emmanuel,” which speaks about the advent of the Christ, God’s healing message to humanity. If I ever needed to know that God was with me, it was right now.
