A spiritual agenda for the New Year

From the tragedy of 9/11—and all the challenges growing out of that event—to last year’s tsunami, the war in Iraq, the worst hurricane season on record and the suffering resulting from the earthquake in Pakistan, it has seemed as though the world is under siege. How do we gain a sense of peace?

First, I find it important to recognize that what we have witnessed is not actually a new phenomenon, just happening in our lifetime. Individuals have had to face such trials for centuries, and with each one God has met their needs.

Second, it is strengthening to learn from the wonderful characters in the Bible and from the early Christians that turned to divine Providence and found answers. Moses led a people out of bondage through God’s direction. David overcame Goliath, who had slaughtered many innocent people. Elijah and Elisha, as well as many of the other prophets, showed people how prayer would enable them to find sustenance in the face of famine, safety in the midst of violence and persecution and hope during calamities.
