Praying for the winter Olympics in Russia
Live audio chat with Marie Helm, C.S.B.
Marie opens this chat by focusing on one of the goals from the Olympic Charter: “The goal of Olympism is to place sport at the service of the harmonious development of humankind, with a view to promoting a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity.” She says this goal is really spiritual in nature because harmony, peace, and individual dignity are spiritual qualities—which are necessary elements of living peacefully in a community, whether on a small or global scale. She says this can encourage all of us to unite in prayer to help strengthen the spirit and achieve the goals of the Olympic Games.
Marie answers a range of questions about how to pray in support of the Olympics in Russia, including questions about the spiritual qualities athletes express; supporting sportsmanship at the Olympics; countering nationalism and competition; healing political tensions between the United States and Russia; uplifting Russian government and society in general; and praying for safety, security, and preventing terrorism.
