Prayer about the Gulf Coast oil spill

Kit Wittich, C. S.

Remarking on some of the good that has already been accomplished in controlling the oil spill, and recognizing that prayer played a part, Kit takes as her theme, Jesus’ statement from Mark’s Gospel, “With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible” (10:27). She says Jesus proved that a God-based, spiritual view brings practical and actual healing solutions to the human scene, no matter what the situation seems to be. These healing solutions prove that the laws of matter and physics fall before the laws of omnipresent Spirit and omnipotent, God, good.

Kit responds to several questions about the environmental impact if the spill does come ashore and especially to concerns about the welfare of the animals in affected areas. She shares some of her experiences related to hurricanes and the power of prayer to help people through them. She also addresses dealing with the media tendency to hype disasters, spiritually supporting those whose livelihoods are affected, the loss of the 11 men who were killed when the rig exploded; fear and uncertainty, anger and sorrow about the danger the oil is posing; the tendency to blame BP for everything that has happened, and safety issues.
