Spiritual solutions to eating disorders

Candace du Mars, C.S.B.

“Even if the more severe forms of compulsive consumption aren’t a big part of our experience,” says Candace du Mars, “we all eat, so we’ve all had to deal with beliefs about food and diet in our own lives.” She responds to questions from site visitors by helping them find order instead of disorder in how to think about food. She explains that we’ve made food the enemy by believing it has power over us. The way out is to see that we are spiritual, not material, and that divine Love is pouring forth good to us all the time. Instead of fearing food, we can accept God’s goodness and His unfolding plan for us. Candace helps make this point by telling about her own experiences in overcoming gastritis and being overweight. She says that what we’re really seeking can only be satisfied by God and by accepting His goodness, which is coming to us all the time.

Among other questions, Candace addresses how to respond to pressure on athletes to weigh a certain amount, excessive love of sweets, concerns about weight and body image, how to balance a spiritual approach to eating, and obsession with food.
