Peniel

By Jabbok's ford the patriarch, all alone,Strove with an angel till the break of day;Yet yielded not, nor was he overthrown.

Steadfast

As some great rock upon a rugged coastBy breakers clutched and lashed from eve to morn,Submerged ofttimes beneath the angry waves,Stands firmly through the violence of the storm,And in the dawn, unshaken and unmoved,Lifts its high peak toward the morning skyInto the rosy flush of newborn dayTo shimmer, golden, in the rising sun;

The desert plain seemed arid, void of life;No flower or fruit was seen, no beast or bird;Within its scorching waste, nor man, nor maid,No sound of rippling waters to be heard.

Truth's Watchman

A watchman, standing on the tower of Truth—Thus do I like to think of you, dear friend;Watching for the angelic messagesWhich Love unto your waiting thought doth send.

Soul

In Thee, O Soul, so glorious and free,Infinite, perfect, ageless, deathless, vast,I see all being, all that is to be,Or has been, or is now—the present, past,And future in one perfect changeless whole,O glorious Soul!

The Practitioner

Oh , helping hand, for thee I reachAs floweret seeks the light;A glow of truth, a warmth of love,Thou bringest to my night.

Omnipresence

Not in the whirlwind—God; a still small voiceRevealed His affluence to the waiting seer.

Rest

To have no fear—To go about my work with footsteps light;To sing a song of joy from morn till night;To leave all care to Him who clothes the flower;To know that Love, and Love alone, is power;Oh, this is rest!

"He that overcometh"

As Jesus fasted in the wildernessAnd prayed for strength, the tempter came to himPrepared to overcome the pure in heart,And murmured, knowing him to be an hungered:If it be true thou art the Son of God,Command these stones that they be turned to bread,For truly thou hast fasted long enough.
