Poems

Nativity

How vibrant were the hills of BethlehemThat Christmas morning when the angels sangOf peace on earth; how roundly echoes rangUntil it seemed the mountains spoke with them! How truly wise those sages who discernedThat gleaming star set in the eastern sky—Who recognized the star of prophecy,And homeward to the Christ their footsteps turned!

"I am the way"

The way of Truth is long, the path is steep; But he who bravely perseveres shall reapThe full reward of courage.

I saw that in order to find my life, I had to first lose it—that is, lose all sense of life as material.

"Send out thy light"

Oh , follow and obey the inward yearningThat leads to heights attainable and fair;Oh, keep thy lamp forever trimmed and burning,That no dream shadow mar the glory there.

Reflection

As the quiet pool reflectsGlowing sky and verdant tree,So the humble heart revealsPatterns of Thy purity.

Penetration

FATHER, we thank Thee that the light of TruthReaches the dullness of earth's heavy dream; That Thy dear tenderness shines forth undimmed,And undismayed pours forth its loving beam.

Two Gems

Into my hand two gems were droppedFrom out a friend's pure thought:The one denied all error's claimsWith which my life was fraught; The other one affirmed the mightOf good, which fills all space,The power of Truth to set men freeAnd evil's claims erase.

Expression

Only by giving can I realizeThe affluence that is forever mine,Only by loving know the ever-presenceAnd sweet fulfillment of the Love divine.

"The issues from death"

With knowledge true of God the Master saidTo one who sought his aid, "Be not afraid.

Atonement

HERE lay we down, O Father, every burden; In sin destroyed we find Thy perfect pardon.

"Bring them hither to me"

I LIKE to think how kind the Master's face,As he explained to that young lad of yoreHow God had need of his five barley loavesAnd two small fishes—all his slender store.

The New Light

I TOO have seen in revelation's lightThe vision new, the heaven and earth divine,The boundless realm with no dividing line; The timeless day with no encroaching night.

"Kings and priests"

To know dominion is to be a kingWithin the realm of Mind that knows no boundOf time or place, of person or of thing;Where happiness and health and hope are foundIn freedom from the Adam-dream,In consciousness of good supreme.
