THE EXPLANATORY NOTE

It has become the custom in Christian Science churches for Christian Scientists in some cases to share their copy of the Quarterly with strangers who come to the services, in others to lend it to these strangers, and the custom is certainly one to be commended, demonstrating as it does a spirit of friendliness and welcome.

The splendid crowd at the Lyceum yesterday afternoon [March 17], when the lecture on Christian Science was given, demonstrated that people are prepared to give attention to the claims of this great and wonderful movement that is now world-wide.
On account of some congratulatory remarks published by Society a few months ago on the remarkable cure, through Christian Science, of Charles Dawson, the English ex-champion billiardist, when opticians and other specialists had failed to remedy his blindness, we are now favored with the following letter:—

In order to determine whether any teaching is in conformity with the Bible, an understanding of the meaning of both is necessary.
In a recent issue there appeared an article entitled "American Loyalty to Judaism," in which it is said, "We sincerely believe that ninety per cent of the so-called Jewish Christian Scientists do not know that Christian Science and Christianity are one and the same, and that by going over to Christian Science they, strictly speaking, abandon the faith of Israel, the faith in the one eternal God who, as declared by the prophet Isaiah, is Israel's only 'Saviour.
Appreciating the kindly reference to Christian Science in a recent issue of Table Talk, and in no sense depreciating the work and efforts of those who are seeking in metaphysics surcease for themselves and others from the abounding ills arising from the belief of life, power, and intelligence in matter, but who have not arrived at the full acceptance of the divine Mind as the only real power, may the writer crave space in your columns for brief discrimination between the healing of Christian Science and "mental suggestion"?
There is no religion on earth that is governed less by "belief" than is Christian Science.
To a Christian Scientist doctors are a body of people engaged in the attempt to mitigate human suffering to the very utmost of their ability, and I will undertake to say that it is impossible to produce a case in which a Christian Scientist has rushed into print to attack the medical profession.

SPIRITUAL-MINDEDNESS

The very fact that one's nature rebels instinctively at anything which calls for excessive effort, indicates that such effort is abnormal.
