Redemption moments in everyday life
When we are alert to God’s guidance, we are redeemed and can delight in His way.
It was pitch dark that morning as I prepared to go to the middle school where I taught. This was to be a landmark day because my university mentor would be evaluating my work to finalize my internship year. I was ready for her observation and assessment, with lesson plans and visual aids in hand.
In my personal life, though, I was in a scary place—going through a divorce, working toward my teaching certification, having trouble paying the bills, and feeling discouraged about my lackluster efforts to practice what I knew from my study of Christian Science. Whenever a situation arose that called for a spiritual solution, I failed to live up to my expectations. I was really good at “talking the talk” but not so much at “walking the walk.”
The night before the assessment, I had found myself worrying about the next day’s visit. Two Bible verses had come to me, both from Psalms: “I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety” (4:8) and “The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me” (138:8). I saw clearly that God’s law was always in operation. But in the morning, I was tempted to fall back on “what if” thoughts. What if the students didn’t respond to my lesson? What if the assigned evaluator didn’t like me?
