Getting beyond cultural norms in our spiritual practice
We can work toward accepting that we all express the vast diversity of the one, infinite Mind, one Father-Mother God.
Churches are a living force that continues to respond to each age’s cultural challenges and opportunities. Their success, however, has not been tied to how they accommodate their cultures, but to how they stay true to their main mission. In Churches of Christ, Scientist, the spiritual foundation is Christ-healing. Building on this foundation, churches unite in their love for God and for the wide diversity of humanity, bearing witness to God’s love for all. And they are a transformative healing power for both individual members and the community each church serves.
Early Christians were dynamic examples of faithfulness to the revelation of Christ’s love for and unity with all. As that revelation burned brightly in their hearts, they dismissed a divisive, demeaning view of culture as matter-defined. Steadfastly adhering to Christ Jesus’ teachings, they perceived the spiritual oneness of God and man, thereby seeing all men, women, and children as God knows each of us: as the expression of divine Spirit.
