What is it we’re working through?

Prayer that starts with God will undoubtedly help us work through anything that comes up today.

“If it’s not one thing, it’s another.” Have you ever found yourself thinking or saying this? It’s a common saying, borne of frustration about what can feel like an endless line of roadblocks in life. Not long ago, these words came to mind, but were quickly followed by the question, “Do we always have to be working through something?”

This stopped me in my mental tracks. Was this an inherently wrong question to ask, or was it a right question that I should perhaps have considered sooner?

From the get-go, I dismissed the notion that we always have to be tackling a new challenge regarding health, work, relationships, supply, etc., on a regular basis. While addressing such issues may be something we do as part of our daily prayer, it feels contrary to the practicality and efficacy of Christian Science to accept that we’re going to be constantly bombarded by problems. After all, our metaphysical work includes not only the conviction that we will see improvement in our lives in proportion to our understanding of the one God and our relation to Him, but also the comfort this brings.
