David and Goliath

Divine supremacy over human ways and means is a central theme in Scripture—plainly showcased in the confrontation between David and his giant adversary, Goliath.

Over many decades before this battle, the people of Philistia had attacked Israel repeatedly. Their military prowess and possession of iron weaponry gave them a distinct advantage in combat. And in this battle, their huge champion inspired terror throughout the Hebrew camp (see I Samuel 17:4–11).

David was an unlikely opponent in a one-on-one contest with an intimidating and seasoned warrior. Not only was the young shepherd untried in battle, but he also rejected conventional armament and protection. Yet it is this disparity that set the scene for his victory, a decisive demonstration of spiritual power.
