Prayerful scrolling

Cellphones seem to attract us repeatedly with the promise of telling us “what’s new.” Scrolling through emails, news sites, and social media to see what’s trending in current events and what’s up with family and friends can sometimes be helpful. Yet there’s growing awareness that aimless or indiscriminate scrolling can drag down our thoughts and waste precious hours.

The good news is that we can bring clear spiritual purpose and discernment to our desire to know what’s happening. For me, this means reorienting my search for news from casual interest to a deep desire to focus my prayer on issues affecting my neighborhood and the world.

Why would I think my prayers could support global progress and healing? Because I’ve experienced so much benefit from prayer as taught in Christian Science, such as healings of physical problems and resolution of financial and legal issues. And I’ve been inspired by testimonies in the Christian Science periodicals, as each one describes healing results from the practice of Christian Science and gives proof of the universal Principle, God. The same spiritual truths that bring healing in our own experience are demonstrably true for everyone, everywhere.
