Why we still need the Bible
In our practice of Christian healing today, it’s encouraging to know that we’re not alone. Wherever we are in the world, whether we are surrounded by a community of like-minded thinkers or not, we still stand with others: the men and women of the Bible.
You may ask, How can this be? Separated by time, culture, and geography, can we really see ourselves as companioned in this spiritual work by those who lived millennia ago? Digging deeper into the Bible’s spiritual meaning—the inspired Word that Christian Science brings out—the answer must inevitably be “Yes!”
The Bible metaphysically grounds us by giving us numerous illustrations of God’s laws at work, proving again and again God’s goodness and omnipotence and providing a depth of understanding that undergirds our faith. For those who practice Christian Science healing, it elevates our sense of purpose from being solitary individuals doing this healing work to seeing ourselves as part of a collective effort by those who, through the ages, have loved God, seen His laws in operation, and proved their presence and power. These revealed laws, such as that God is Love and ever present, are simple and natural. They operate scientifically—for anyone, anywhere, and at any time, as they did in Bible times—and lift us above the physical and mental limitations inherent in the belief that life is in and of matter.
