Gratitude heals debilitating symptoms

After a move in 2014, I had just finished loading boxes into an SUV for another person who needed them, and was about to go through the door leading from the garage to the house.

As I reached to press the button to close the garage door, I suddenly experienced excruciating pain in my head. I lurched down the hallway, struggling to keep my balance while going to my bedroom. When I tried to drink some water, I found that my throat was closing up, and I was unable to swallow. Other alarming symptoms appeared.

Immediately I called a Christian Science practitioner for help through prayer. As I lay there on the bed, I began to pray the Lord’s Prayer. Then I declared aloud, “ ‘I AM’ free!”

Here I must explain that when I use the words “I AM,” it means so much more than what those words normally indicate. When Moses asked God what he should say when the children of Israel asked the name of the God who had sent him, “God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you” (Exodus 3:14). “I AM” is God’s name. And each of us is at one with God as His image, or reflection. So when I said “ ‘I AM’ free,” I was feeling the absolute power of God.

I continued praying in this way, next saying “the scientific statement of being” from the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (Mary Baker Eddy, p. 468). Exploring the meaning of each of the seven synonyms for God explained in the same book, I gave myself Christian Science treatment as I had been taught when I took Primary class instruction in Christian Science.

All at once, my consciousness was illumined with a wonderful feeling of gratitude for Christian Science, my safe haven that I could reliably turn to. About thirty years earlier, I had consciously started a practice of daily, heartfelt gratitude, and it had become a habit so ingrained that I would find myself being grateful many times each day, all day long.

As I lay there in deep prayer, I basked in the all-encompassing love that I know was the presence of God. It’s interesting that I wasn’t trying to be grateful. Gratitude just came to me as a natural part of what I am.

After about twenty minutes of feeling such joy, I felt the symptoms lessening. Within thirty minutes I was completely free. A couple of hours later, I helped lift my piano into the house, joyfully acknowledging God’s complete healing power.

I attribute this quick healing of debilitating symptoms to the effective prayerful work the practitioner and I did, and especially to the powerful gratitude for Christian Science that flooded my consciousness. Genuine, heartfelt gratitude heals.

And still, even now, my heart continues to overflow, saying, “Thank you, God, for Your ‘unspeakable gift’ ” (II Corinthians 9:15)—Christian Science.
