Freed from pain, protected from injury
One night, I was riding a horse I had recently bought, trying to establish some communication and control by getting him to walk over a series of wooden poles laid on the ground. We didn’t know each other very well and hadn’t yet built a trusting relationship. The horse would not go over the poles with me in the saddle, so I decided to dismount and try to guide him over the poles by circling him around me using a lead rope about six feet long. This put me in close proximity to him, but at this point I was in a hurry and impatient.
As he picked up speed on the circle, at one point I was unaware that I was close to his hindquarters, and suddenly, without warning, the horse kicked me in the stomach with his hind leg. I doubled over in pain. It was quite a jolt.
I calmed my thought by knowing that one idea of God could not harm another idea of God. Mary Baker Eddy writes in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, “All of God’s creatures, moving in the harmony of Science, are harmless, useful, indestructible” (p. 514).
I put the horse away and called a Christian Science practitioner for prayerful help. I am so grateful that the practitioner was there to take my call, even though it was 7:30 at night. He assured me that my spiritual perfection as the expression of God was intact and that all was well, as nothing could alter my status as God’s beloved child. He also encouraged me to forgive my horse.
Forgiving my horse was the easy part. Forgiving myself for a mistake that I, a horse person, should have known not to make was harder. I had to forgive myself for thinking that a mistake was possible and could have dire effects.
Can God’s idea, man (the true identity of each of us), ever be separated from his Maker under any circumstances? My answer to that question was a resounding “No!” The allness of God, good, precludes everything unlike good, and since all creatures, including me, are “moving in the harmony of Science,” the horse and I were both governed only by God’s law, the law of divine Love. Therefore, there could not be a mistake, an accident, or an injury within the realm of Soul, God. Science and Health says, “Undisturbed amid the jarring testimony of the material senses, Science, still enthroned, is unfolding to mortals the immutable, harmonious, divine Principle,—is unfolding Life and the universe, ever present and eternal” (p. 306).
The fear that I possessed a material body with organs that could be harmed or could harm me was lifted, and the realization that we “live, and move, and have our being” in God (Acts 17:28) filled my thought.
By the time I had driven home, I was free of pain. There were no complications of any kind, and the large area of bruising disappeared in a couple of weeks. This healing took place several years ago and has been complete.
Being able to call a practitioner in an emergency situation is not only comforting but brings much gratitude for their dedication to the cause of Christian Science.
