Anger healed, pain eliminated
A number of years ago, I found myself having moments of anger for no apparent reason. Eventually, because I felt so put off by what I saw whenever I looked in the mirror, I sensed that the anger stemmed from the thought that I was aging.
Detecting this incorrect belief was a step forward, since viewing myself as a mortal declining with the passage of time is directly opposed to the truth of man’s being as the perfect, eternal expression of God. But I needed to do more than just identify the error, as I realized when I began having a physical problem.
My wife and I were on vacation when I noticed a pain in my stomach. As the pain worsened, I prayed with the Lord’s Prayer, “the scientific statement of being” from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy (see p. 468), and other spiritual truths. I knew from my study of Christian Science that, in reality, God’s man is spiritual and never deteriorates because God never deteriorates. Therefore, what needed correction was not a physical body, but rather my thought of myself as aging and becoming infirm.
