Gratitude brings healing of a scorpion’s stings

Several summers ago, very early in the morning, I was stung three times by a scorpion that had gotten into my bed.

From as early as I can remember, I have seen and experienced Christian Science healing in my own life and later in my work as a Christian Science nurse, so I naturally turned to the healing method I knew to be effective. As I prayed, I quickly called a friend of mine, who was also a Christian Science nurse, and he agreed to give me a ride to the Christian Science nursing facility where we worked. I happened to be the director of nursing at the facility at that time. On the way, I called a Christian Science practitioner to pray for me, and she affirmed that “the word of God is quick, and powerful …” (Hebrews 4:12), and that God is the only power that governs my life and that there is no other power that could harm me.

At the facility, Christian Science nurses helped me to bed, watched over me, and were very calm and reassuring. As dawn approached on that same morning, I was sitting up in bed attempting to pray when I noticed that it was becoming more and more difficult to move or speak. A Christian Science nurse helped me call the practitioner again, and the practitioner reassured me that God is the only power, and that power is good. I then decided that I needed to be grateful, to actively refute my fear that the poison could have any effect by affirming God’s power. Having seen many healings, I knew from my experience as a Christian Science nurse that expressing gratitude focuses our thought on the ever-presence of God’s goodness, and that can be a very powerful way to overcome fear. As the Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, wrote in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: “Are we really grateful for the good already received? Then we shall avail ourselves of the blessings we have, and thus be fitted to receive more” (p. 3). I decided I would write down every healing that I could remember having witnessed, either my own or those of patients I had helped as a Christian Science nurse.
