Beloved as the sparrows
I am sitting next to a beautiful pool of blue water, watching sparrows as they flutter and flit and splash at the water’s edge. There are more than I can count—so many that at times they seem to blend into a brown-flecked flurry—yet each one is a distinct individual, chirping loud notes of delight.
Psalm 84 speaks of sparrows as an example of how God cares for every individual in His creation: “Yea, the sparrow hath found an house, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, even thine altars, O Lord of hosts, my King, and my God” (verse 3).
Christ Jesus, too, speaks of sparrows: “Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows” (Luke 12:6, 7). This shows that every one of us is needed and precious to God.
