Never a victim
As I look back at my growing-up years, there were lots of fun times, including school, bike-riding, games of kick-the-can, occasional visits to a Christian Science Sunday School, exploration in vacant fields, swings in the park, softball in neighborhood streets, and even some relatively good family vacation trips.
But that was in stark contrast with most evenings in our household, where I witnessed frightening alcohol-induced acts of violence. Sunday School was an oasis in the middle of this continual storm. I listened to every word, and tried valiantly to cling to what I was learning there—a sense of real Father-Mother parenting, as well as my God-granted heritage of fearlessness and joy.
