Prayer and our 'blessing business'

Four years ago, the boat business that my husband and I own was in need of a serious jump-start. We’d been selling fast high-end recreational trawlers for about six years, and we suddenly found ourselves in need of customers. As students of Christian Science, our first inclination was to turn to God for inspiration, answers, and direction. But then, within a few short months, the stock market took a dive and what we now know as “the economic recession” took off. This wasn’t exactly the answer to prayer I was expecting!

At first, I felt only a sense of burden, and quite frankly annoyance, at our situation. There was little, if any, joy in my thought. That was my first hurdle to overcome. Slowly, I began to see that this challenge was simply an opportunity to prove my love for God and my trust in His healing power. And so I plunged into the study of Christian Science as I never had before.

Every weekly Christian Science Bible Lesson, every citation from the Bible and Science and Health, every article from the Sentinel and The Christian Science Journal took on new and deeper meaning. Every day I was learning more and more about gratitude, about dominion, about God as Life and Mind and Love. I knew that if God is Life, He-She is expressing—and we are reflecting—activity, movement, and progress. I knew that if God is Mind, He-She is expressing—and we are reflecting—direction, intelligence, perfect timing. There could be no excess or void, nor too much nor too little. I knew that God as Love was providing and caring for us. I felt confident that God loved all His creation, was committed to us, and would not abandon us. All of these were powerful truths about God and His-Her creation, and they were truths that heal.
