Bikes and kites

As I slowly biked up the hill on my way to work, a young boy who was waiting for the school bus at the end of his driveway asked, “Is it hard biking up the hill?” Without hesitation, I responded, “Yes, but it makes me strong!”

I’ve reflected often on that impromptu answer. The hills, or tough times in our lives, do make us strong. They force us to work harder, to not take things for granted, to persist with our prayers, until we reach the “top of the hill,” or find healing for whatever situation we’re facing.

But we don’t have to struggle or muscle our way up our particular “hill” alone. A favorite hymn of mine assures me that God, divine Mind, strengthens and guides us, “I climb, with joy, the heights of Mind / To soar o’er time and space.” The hymn goes on to give us hope for what will happen if we keep climbing: “I yet shall know as I am known / And see Thee face to face.” That’s pretty good motivation! When we keep on facing those hilly times, we are comforted by knowing that God is always with us: “Thy presence ever goes with me / And Thou dost give me peace” (Violet Hay, Christian Science Hymnal, No. 136).
