Joining up

I didn’t join just because the church was a stunningly beautiful building (Byzantine architecture, they called it).

I didn’t join just because church members warmly greeted me, welcomed me, and answered my questions.

I didn’t join just because two couples from church expressed such selfless love by making an hour-long car drive to visit my husband and me after a tragic car accident.

I didn’t join just because I liked the holy music and the honored pipe organ. (To be honest, I didn’t really like the music at first; I missed the down-home hymns from the church in which I was raised. But I came not only to appreciate Christian Science hymns, but to find great comfort and healing from them.)

I didn’t join just because the Readers in the church were soulful readers who made Bible stories come to life and illuminated the Bible with clear passages from Science and Health.

I joined the Christian Science church because as I sat in my first church service, I had an inkling for the first time of God’s forever love, of His presence, and of my humble, unique place as Her child. I felt a sense of peace, and I’ve learned since then that the love I felt is the Christ. I joined church ready and eager to serve God, ready to pray that others would come to know and feel that same Love and peace.
