Growth on jaw healed

In a By-Law called “Alertness to Duty” in the Church Manual, Mary Baker Eddy directed each member of her Church to “defend himself daily against aggressive mental suggestion” (p. 42). I had a healing last Christmas that illustrated the value of this By-Law.

One morning as I was preparing to go to work, I noticed that there was a swelling on my face close to my jaw. It was uncomfortable, but because I was busy with the demands of my job, I did not address this specifically in my daily prayerful work. Although I denied the presence of anything that could attack my spiritual perfection, over the next few days this area became more obtrusive and painful. I remember feeling irritated at the fact that I was so uncomfortable, and praying that nothing could interfere with my active ministry as a Christian Science nurse.

I decided to make a conscientious, wholehearted attempt to discover what Mrs. Eddy and our Master, Christ Jesus, captured in their love for God and humanity, which enabled them to discern a need and heal instantaneously. Was it loving God supremely and not allowing error into my thought? Was it loving my neighbor without judgment or expectation? Was it learning to forgive myself when I didn’t live up to my own expectations?
