Finding my teacher—How I prayed for direction

After a few friends , who were unfamiliar with Christian Science, came to me with situations that needed healing and asked me to pray for them, I decided it was time for me to take Christian Science Primary class instruction. While each of these cases progressed or were healed completely, I wanted to have a more thorough understanding of the divine laws that heal. I also wanted more confidence in my prayers for others, and I knew taking this class would be a good solution.

I decided to devote time to finding a teacher. I’d spoken to many friends who had been through class, hearing their stories of how they’d found their teacher. Some had met the person before. Others had seen their teacher lecture or had been inspired by their articles in the Christian Science magazines. Others simply prayed while looking over the list of teachers and practitioners in The Christian Science Journal and, in their words, “just knew.”

All these stories were great, but none of them sounded like they were to be my story for a number of reasons. To my knowledge, I didn’t know any teachers personally. I read and subscribed to the Christian Science magazines, but I couldn’t remember the names of the articles that had touched me, much less their authors. I could only remember the inspiring ideas. And, as for lecturers, I could only remember the name of one lecturer I’d heard—the lecture had blown me away. That left a lot of teachers I knew nothing about.
