A spiritual view of the economy

A recent Time/Money magazine survey reported that Americans are extremely pessimistic about economic conditions and about the future (see moneyland.time.com/2011/09/29). They are not alone. Huge efforts have been made to bring stability to Eurozone finances, but there are still many unknowns.

Austerity and fear argue that they are in the driver’s seat, but neither condition can lift the pessimism that is stifling progress. Could it be time to change drivers? Rather than passively waiting to see how things turn out, those who understand the spiritual law of Christian Science can prayerfully insist that Love is present and is the driving force for progress.

During his ministry, Jesus laid out rules or concepts that describe our relationship with each other and with God. This is a rule from Luke’s Gospel: “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again” (6:38).
