Stability in the world’s economies

The financial situation in Europe continues to be grave, and the temptation for countries to abandon the euro is rising. If the euro collapsed, The Economist reports, this event “would bring with it unprecedented technical, economic and political costs” (“Don’t do it,” December 2, 2010). The financial impact would seriously affect all economies, including that of the United States.

At this time it seems vital for all people and nations to unite in the support of good—not material gain, but the higher spiritual good that is at the heart of Mary Baker Eddy’s book Unity of Good. The title itself is helpful. It turns one to God, good, and away from the human scene, with its struggle to find answers by reliance on human minds and material parameters. Only by recognizing our unity with divine Spirit can permanent, healing answers be found.

In this book Mrs. Eddy also wrote about the erroneous nature of evil, saying: “A lie has only one chance of successful deception,—to be accounted true. Evil seeks to fasten all error upon God, and so make the lie seem part of eternal Truth” (p. 17). We need to meet this lie—that the only answer to the world’s financial crisis is to be found by looking to matter instead of to Spirit—with prayer, authoritatively and persistently, almost as though we were part of a defending army fighting for its homeland.
