‘It made such good sense!’

When Christian Science came into my life, things couldn’t have been much worse. I was a single mother, hopping from job to job and in and out of relationships, without any real purpose or direction. I was taking up to 16 medications for arthritis, hepatitis B, a degenerative disk disease, and carpal tunnel syndrome (for which I had to wear braces).

This followed a really tough childhood, which also involved an unsettling move to another state. From the age of 14, I was sent from boarding school to boarding school until I had no idea where I really belonged. On Saturdays I went to Sunday School, where I can remember sitting sideways in class, learning very little about the Bible and all those wonderful stories in it. Nothing made much sense to me. On Sundays, my grandmother took me to church, but I spent most of the time thinking about the cheeseburger and milkshake we’d go for afterwards at Friendly’s.

But I talked a lot to God when I was little. I was always listening. There were angel messages all the time, telling me things to do and not to do. I didn’t know where the thoughts were coming from, but I knew without a doubt that they were all good—strictly good. I didn’t know it was God, and I didn’t realize that was the main reason I was always helping people— I loved to make them happy.
