PRAYER ON THE LACROSSE FIELD

For the last five years, I've refereed women's high school lacrosse games. Before last season began, I decided it was time to put Christian Science to work before the games, rather than just praying about issues once they came up during play.

The first opportunity arose prior to spring rating day, where all the referees officiate two scrimmages and are rated by assessors. In the past, I'd felt that one of the assessors was extremely picky when evaluating my skills.

So this year, I started praying before I ever got on the field. My prayer wasn't focused on getting a good evaluation, but on gaining a better understanding of the true identity of both myself and others as individual ideas of God, expressing all the spiritual qualities that God gives each of us. One of the immediate results was that a friend who was also a referee offered to mentor me during the season. She showed me techniques that put me in the best position to make the right calls, and, where necessary, explained some technical rules of the game I'd previously misunderstood.
