IN THE NEWS A SPIRITUAL PERSPECTIVE

God's certainty in uncertain economic times

"Asian Stocks Fall on U.S. Jobless Claims Increase; Japan's Nikkei Slumps" (Bloomberg, August 5, 2010).

This headline captures the interconnectedness of international economies and the way that bad news (or good) shapes the decisions individuals and governments make. It's just one example of the unease that governments, financiers, and citizens are feeling.

"Uncertainty, uncertainty, uncertainty," was the way that Javier Perez-Santalla put it. Perez-Santalla is managing director for futures and foreign exchange at the Dinosaur Group ("Stocks retreat as Fed grows more cautious," www.daily finance.com, August 11, 2010). The uncertainty can be seen around the globe in the European Union's struggle to address member nations' economic troubles, and in a cooling of China's economy. The US economy, popularly seen as consumer driven, normally helps fuel global prosperity, but at present is still struggling with severe unemployment, fears of inflation or deflation, and concern about deficits.
