Our biweekly series on how people have nurtured their public practice of Christian Science healing.
WAS I GETTING SOMEONE ELSE'S MESSAGE?
I WAS FOUNDER and co-owner of a popular kids' T-shirt company. People loved our product and designs. Demand was high, and a large children's store was our best customer. But we just couldn't get our manufacturing right, and I spent most of my time feeling anxious. This was normal, I was told, "just part of the trade." All I knew was that I was unhappy.
Mainly, it felt like I'd moved away from my purpose. Every night I would come home and say to my wife, "I don't want to work with these people anymore. But I'd gladly pray for them!" Deep down I knew that I couldn't blame my co-workers for my attitude. A spiritual stand was needed. You see, finding Christian Science in 2001 had meant so much to me and my wife and, now, our two sons. In the years since I came into Christian Science, took class instruction, joined The Mother Church, joined a branch church and started taking the boys to Sunday School, our family had experienced many healings—physical, financial, and then some. But at that time, I was so wrapped up in my work that I wasn't even praying for myself, much less anyone else.
Last year, the meeting of my Christian Science association was slowly approaching. I remembered that taking Primary class instruction had been a time to deepen prayer for myself and others. It's where I learned how to heal effectively. Unfortunately, at the moment, spiritual refreshment at association seemed like a nice idea in theory, but not feasible in the real world, where I thought I just needed to keep slugging it out.
