PLENTY OF GOOD TO GO AROUND
"Let's all go around the table and say something we're grateful for." Sound familiar? Even for those who don't have the tradition of celebrating the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday in the US, giving gratitude is universal—much more than ritual or cloying sentiment, or as John Oguta from Kenya puts it, more than "an abstract exercise" (see p. 17).
Instead of the usual turkey and mashed potatoes meal, this week's Sentinel is another kind of feast. I like to think about all the readers and writers sharing the plenty of spiritual ideas that never run out.
Our focus on thanks this week begins with Christian Science practitioner Denny Colliver writing from Australia about Jesus' reliance on the abundance that only God can give. Her prayers at a time when she and her husband were farming olives show how spiritual understanding brings this abundance to light (p. 14).
With unemployment numbers remaining high, it may seem difficult to count your blessings. But Bill Fabian shares how he focused on gratitude even before he was employed, after relocating to a part of the country where job opportunities were scarce. He asked himself if he really believed there was more of God's goodness in one place than another (see "Gratitude in the job search," p. 18).
And even when Thanksgiving dinner with friends looks like it's going to be a mess, can prayer save the day? Turn to page 16 to find out.
These global voices are just a sampling of how gratitude weaves us together. Thinking of what we're thankful for here at the Sentinel, you—our readers—are at the top of the list!
WHAT I SAY UNTO YOU I SAY UNTO ALL, WATCH.
—JESUS
The Christian Science Sentinel was founded in 1898 by Mary Baker Eddy, and its mission remains the same: "to hold guard over Truth, Life, and Love." The Sentinel continues to report on the unlimited ways that the healing power and presence of the Christ activates, uplifts, and transforms the lives of everyday people around the world.
