SUDDEN ILLNESS HEALED

In Science and Health, Mary Baker Eddy referred to a "sovereign antidote" for healing all diseases. She identified God, Truth, as this antidote, declaring God to be "a power which opens the prison doors to such as are bound, and sets the captive free physically and morally" (p. 495). I leaned on these spiritual ideas earlier this year.

One evening, I suddenly felt severely ill—I was feverish and couldn't keep any food down. I found myself reaching for my trusted "antidote"—divine Love and Truth, the presence of God. As a Christian Scientist, relying on prayer alone, I knew through many healings I'd experienced that this Love is always present and equal to any emergency. Divine Love is infinite, without limits, encircling the whole earth! This Love can be more tangibly felt when one grasps the truth of being—that one's identity is not material at all, but completely spiritual because we are a reflection of God.

These ideas formed the basis of my prayer. I knew I could never step "outside" of God's embrace. But I felt baffled by this sudden illness, since I'd been doing lots of praying that week and had been feeling especially inspired and uplifted. I felt like this illness was an attempt by mortal mind, or the matter-based mentality that challenges God's supremacy, to knock the wind out of my sails and undo the spiritual progress that had taken place in my thought.
