SONGS AT MIDNIGHT

EARLY IN AUGUST, Slate, an online magazine, posed this question to its readers: "How is America going to end?" What the magazine described as a "weeklong thought experiment on the United States' demise" attracted over 60,000 participants, a good number of them from outside the US, including about 15 percent from Slate's Russian site.
