INFLUENZA HEALED

Christian Science has taught me to successfully bring healing into my life by realizing, as Mary Baker Eddy explained in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, that with God I am able to conquer illness.

Some years ago I had an opportunity to prove this when a severe outbreak of influenza occurred in the large high school where I was teaching. At the height of the epidemic, around two-thirds of both staff and students were absent, and at one point, on a Tuesday, I started to come down with the symptoms as well. But I simply had to manage to stay at work, since there were not enough relief teachers to cover all the classes and the school's policy was that all staff report to school, whether or not they were infected.

When I got home that evening, I attempted to pray as I would usually do, but I immediately fell asleep. I struggled to school each day that week, trying to pray in the evenings, but would just fall asleep. On Saturday, feeling that I just had to be at school on Monday, I realized that I must do something to keep myself awake so that I could pray. Despite the fact that I was then having great difficulty remaining on my feet, I decided to go out for a walk.
