PRAYER BY THE SEA

Tired of rehearsing yesterday's
thin expectations I walk
to the sea, select
a rock for resting on
in silence and alone.
I watch green waters
ripple over the pebbled beach
while fuchsia clouds transpose the gray
into a purple set for gulls to glide across
announcing who they are, demanding
an apology for trespassing. Applause
sweeps through the willows while
a steady tide allows the sun
to slip beyond our earth.

Here in such stillness, Lord,
my prayer abides: I do
know who you are.
