A HEALING OF REACTION TO POISON IVY

It was a beautiful August morning, and I was hanging laundry out to dry in the backyard, when the idea came to me to make a new flower bed. I worked fast, without garden gloves, to dig up weeds and grass before the sun heated up the lawn. Later in the afternoon, I decided to kill a large patch of poison ivy for my husband, in a separate area, using a spray bottle of weedkiller.

The next day, I noticed a few bumps on my arm but didn't think much about them, as they appeared small and insignificant. My left eye was beginning to itch and show minor swelling, but I still felt comfortable going with my husband to our regular dance class that evening.

But the following morning, when I walked into the bathroom and saw my face in the mirror, I thought I might faint. At that point, I realized that I needed help. And I decided to follow what I'd learned in Christian Science and "look away from the body into Truth and Love," and focus on the spiritual facts about my relationship to God (p. 261). A familiar statement from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, came to thought: "Undisturbed amid the jarring testimony of the material senses, Science, still enthroned, is unfolding to mortals the immutable, harmonious, divine Principle,—is unfolding Life and the universe, ever present and eternal" (p. 306).
