HEALED AFTER FALL

Recently, the local gas utility in my area was engaged in construction activity to upgrade their system. This involved their accessing certain areas in my home. In getting ready for their visit, I decided to move a small piece of furniture downstairs so it would be out of their way. Since I live alone, I knew I would have to carry the piece without assistance, and though it was a bit heavy, it felt manageable.

As I was taking the piece downstairs, I lost my balance and plunged headfirst down the stairs, landing with considerable force on my face. I was stunned but immediately prayed, affirming the fact that God is always in control. In a few minutes, I was able to get up and make my way to the bathroom to clean up my face.

I then telephoned a Christian Science pracitioner for prayerful support. The first thing she said after I explained what had happened was, "Don't hurt yourself." This statement roused my thinking and immediately called to mind the following statement in Science and Health: "When an accident happens, you think or exclaim, 'I am hurt!' Your thought is more powerful than your words, more powerful than the accident itself, to make the injury real" (p. 397). This is under the marginal heading "Remedy for accidents."
