FREED FROM A HEART CONDITION

Originally published in Der Herold der Christlichen Wissenschaft

Some time ago I started experiencing an irregular heartbeat. At first I didn't pay much attention to it, as I was convinced this condition had its cause in the stress at my job. I expected the symptoms to disappear as soon as I did a better job of organizing my work.

But in spite of my best efforts, I wasn't able to accomplish any changes in my busy work schedule, and the physical trouble increased as well. I felt it necessary to get clarity about the condition from a medical point of view, and so I consulted a doctor. After examining me, the doctor told me to see a specialist as soon as possible to get a more accurate diagnosis and be able to determine the treatment that would be necessary. After the test, I was told that more tests would need to be done.

At this point I became distrustful of the process, as I didn't think it should take that long to make a determination. I decided against taking the medication that was offered to me and did not take any more tests. Instead I turned to prayer completely, and decided to rely on the healing power of Christian Science. I'd been accustomed to praying in all situations, including health issues.

As I studied the Bible and Science and Health, the following passages stood out to me: "He directs their heart, he takes care of all their works" (Ps. 33:15, Luther Bible). This pointed out to me that my functions were not controlled physically, but spiritually; not randomly, but by harmonious divine direction. Another passage was from Isaiah: "Those that wait for the Lord will gain new strength . . ." (Isa. 40:31, Luther Bible). I realized that strength or action is not generated by the body, and that I could trust that God is the only Cause. Since God is good, there could only be one good Cause and its good effect.

Science and Health gives seven special names, or synonyms, for God that help us understand more completely the nature of God. One of these is Soul. Soul's qualities include spiritual joy, satisfaction, rhythm, or beat, as well as inner peace and calm—all things that I reflected in a perfect way. Mary Baker Eddy described Soul this way: "Soul is synonymous with Spirit, God, the creative, governing, infinite Principle outside of finite form, which forms only reflect" (Science and Health, p. 71).

I had taken Christian Science class instruction and had learned that there could be only one reality, and this reality was spiritual. A good start for my prayer was to look away from the physical symptoms and turn to the spiritual, causative reality.

I insisted that Soul determined the rhythm of my heart and that it was doing so without any outside influences. Soul does not allow mistakes ("mis-beats") or discord to govern its creation, because in divine harmony all is perfect.

According to the Bible, God created man in His image—that is, good and perfect. Each one of us has the right to be an exact reflection of God.

With continued prayer, it became easier and easier for me to look toward this wonderful and secure foundation of my spiritual identity. And whenever there was evidence of the physical difficulty, I affirmed the truth about my spiritual life controlled by God.

Improvement did not come right away, but as I kept praying, the physical discomfort faded away. Soon I noticed that I was totally free of all the symptoms. It's been over two years, and this healing has been permanent. I'm very grateful to know Christian Science and be able to apply it in my life.
